    Dogg Master sample tracks

I don’t know who the French person behind the moniker is, but the music he creates is definitely worth checking out. On his MySpace page you can listen to a small selection of tracks, all of them heavily inspired by 80’s electro-funk artists like Zapp, Roger Troutman, Mtume, Atomic Dog era George Clinton and early 90’s hip-hop from the likes of Snoop Dogg. My favourite song (so far) is called “Bedroom Dance”, a bass-heavy boogie-disco tune with vocoder vocals that will make you move!

Daryl Easlea – “Everybody Dance: Chic and the Politics of Disco” (2004)

chic-everybody_dance“ALERT: Yet another upper working-class white boy from Britain writes about a group and phenomena that occurred in another country when he was only 12″. It may not be the best way for an author to start a book about one of the most well known yet thoroughly underrated (disco) bands in history, and even though that statement is true, it is no way indicative of the content in this finely crafted book about the people behind the name and the music.

Chic live in Norway – “Everybody Dance / We Are Family”

One last Chic clip… It’s really sad that it is no longer possible to see the original line up live with Bernard Edwards on bass and Tony Thompson on drums together with Nile Rodgers, but thankfully their music lives on (click the “HQ” button when the video starts playing to get better quality):

Chic live in Montreux – “I Want Your Love”

Yeah, I know, posting YouTube clips is old hat these days, but I’m going to publish a review of a great book about Chic soon, and I just wanted to remind people how outstanding and alive their music still is today (click the “HQ” button when the video starts playing to get better quality):

    Syrup – “Different Flavours” (2000)

syrup-different_flavoursHidden behind the unknown band name is what can best be described as the disco bastard child of the German old school funk maestros The Poets of Rhythm, a simple fact that should speak volumes about the quality of the music. This is disco in the good and “classical” sense, not the diluted kind that has more or less attached itself to the genre over the past 20 years or so. Ironically, there are a couple of house tracks included here that honestly sound out of place when compared to the rest of the material.

Los Amigos Invisibles – Remixes and collaborations

los_amigos_invisiblesOne of my all-time favourite bands and also some of the friendliest people I have ever met are these gentlemen from Venezuela, better known as Los Amigos Invisibles. The whole band, and especially their guitar player and DJ José Luis Pardo, have remixed and collaborated with a lot of different bands and artists over the years, and presented here are some audio samples of the (in my own humble opinion) best resulting tracks – it’s a long list, so please read on:

    Groove Collection 12″ series

groove_collectionAs a mostly vinyl playing DJ, I like compilations because they save me a lot of time and weight, and when the track selection is good, it can get you out of a pinch when you’re playing for a tough crowd. The “Groove Collection” 12″ series has now passed 50 records in total, and to be honest, not all of them are great, but a select few are really good, listen for yourself and decide. Some of the tracks are pretty well known, some are not, but most of them work a treat on the dance floor.
