    Lettuce – “Rage!” (2008)

Don’t let the band name fool you, this is straight up old-school funk played by a new generation of young musicians with plenty of tight chops and respect for the masters of the groove; James Brown, Tower Of Power, The Meters, Curtis Mayfield (which is featured on the album in the form of a very nice cover version of “Move On Up”) and many more. While all the members of the group are very competent players, their drummer Adam Deitch deserves special mention, he perfectly nails the funk down on every track.

    Jamiroquai – “Mr Boogie”

Their last few studio albums haven’t exactly been stellar, hopefully the new one coming out sometime this summer or fall will be a return to form:

    Dogg Master sample tracks

I don’t know who the French person behind the moniker is, but the music he creates is definitely worth checking out. On his MySpace page you can listen to a small selection of tracks, all of them heavily inspired by 80’s electro-funk artists like Zapp, Roger Troutman, Mtume, Atomic Dog era George Clinton and early 90’s hip-hop from the likes of Snoop Dogg. My favourite song (so far) is called “Bedroom Dance”, a bass-heavy boogie-disco tune with vocoder vocals that will make you move!

Funky Halvor + Rune – “Made In Tromsø”

Alphonse Mouzon – “By All Means” (1981)

With an all-star team of performers including Herbie Hancock (keys), Freddie Hubbard (horns), Lee Ritenour (guitars), Alphonse Mouzon (drums/perc) to name a few, it’s no wonder this album contains some quality jazz/funk tracks, with the 14 minute title song leading the way. Most people have heard it on any number of compilation albums, but with the exception of one out-of-place track called “Space Invadors”, the rest of this record is just as good as “By All Means” and it’s well worth seeking out.

The Brand New Heavies – “Heavy Rhyme Experience: Vol. 1″ (1992)

What happens if you combine a highly skilled live band with some of the best rappers in the business like Gang Starr, The Pharcyde, Masta Ace, Main Source and many more? You end up with an instant classic in the form of an album that has a very unique raw energy and drive that is often missing in much of today’s overproduced and highly polished commercial hip-hop. This one-off studio session pays homage to the roots of hip-hop by taking it back to where it all started; The Funk.

    DJ Afro – “Afroshow”

dj_afroDJ Afro, also known as José Luis Pardo – the guitarist in Los Amigos Invisibles, has his own hourly radio show where he spins some of his favorite tunes from many different genres. On his website there is an excellent archive of his newest shows available for online listening, just follow the link above and check it out because there is a lot of really good stuff in there, although some of his house mixes are not my cup of tea.

Swingin Cheese – “Croon Tunes and Kitscherama” (1997)

swingin_cheese-croon_tunes_and_kitschermaIf you ever need a collection of high quality easy listening tunes, and yes, they do exist, this album from Irma Records is fine choice indeed. It covers the period from 1966 – 1972 and the track selections are really good, avoiding the drab elevator music arrangements in favour of solid performances and danceable grooves, making it perfect lounge fare for your ears and feet. Unfortunately it seems to be out of print, so you’ll have to track it down on your own which is probably not that hard.

Chic live in Norway – “Everybody Dance / We Are Family”

One last Chic clip… It’s really sad that it is no longer possible to see the original line up live with Bernard Edwards on bass and Tony Thompson on drums together with Nile Rodgers, but thankfully their music lives on (click the “HQ” button when the video starts playing to get better quality):

Chic live in Montreux – “I Want Your Love”

Pat Metheny – Album commentary tracks

pat_methenyJazz guitarist/composer Pat Metheny has recorded and released what might be called a directors commentary for many of his albums, and it’s interesting stuff to listen to even if you are not a big fan of the genre or his music, because he describes the creative process behind many of the tracks and what inspired their creation and so on. You can find the commentaries on his podcast page (some of them require iTunes), or you can download them all directly from this newsfeed.
